In the Episcopal church, as part of becoming a priest, you have to agree to this statement- “The Bible contains everything necessary for salvation.”

I have a hard time with this. I find awakening and enlightenment to be found in sacred texts from all around the world. I think that God didn’t put all the eggs in one basket. I think that there are way more people on this earth that God wants to reach than just those who have been exposed to the Bible. So I don’t think the Bible is the only pathway to God.

Also, it assumes that God has no intervention going on. I have a hard time believing that you can just read this particular book and you will be saved. What about the intervention of the Holy Spirit? What about coming to know Jesus as your friend? These are not mentioned.

Actually, if all you have to do to get saved is read the Bible, then you don’t need priests at all. Somehow I doubt they have thought about that.

It sounds like idolatry to say that the Bible contains everything necessary for salvation. This sounds like they are worshipping a book, and not the source of the words. The paper is more important than the flesh and blood that is Jesus.

They are worshipping the words and not the Word.

  1. I would have to respectfully and strongly disagree with your thoughts in this post. Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,” As Christians we believe that Bible is the only source of truth.

    • I am Christian. I’ve read all of the Bible. I’ve also read many other sacred texts and found God there too. God is too big to hide away in one book. Using Paul to justify the Bible is illogical. We aren’t Paulians. Jesus said nothing of the sort.

    • Somehow the original point of my post got lost. The point is not that the Bible isn’t the word of God. I didn’t say that. The point is that just reading the Bible isn’t going to save you. God saves people, through Jesus. To believe that just reading a book will save you is idolatrous. For a denomination to ask its ministers to put more faith in words than in Jesus is very disturbing.

  2. If I am truly convinced that all other faiths and philosophies are on the highway to hell, how could I ever have a restful waking moment ? Shouldn’t I be frantic, running from door to door, pleading with the occupants ? If I really believe that all those people are going to hell, then I would be rushing around desperately, in the same way that I would act if the house were on fire, right ? Think how many people are being whisked away to hell while I selfishly brush my teeth ! Or while I watch a movie !

    • Oh, Michael, you are so funny. Wouldn’t it be terrible if God put the entire salvation of the world in our hands? We’d never sleep for trying to do God’s work. God works all the time, through all of us, whether we are intentional about it or not. God is just that big and amazing. So you are safe – go brush your teeth and watch a movie : )
