Psalm 40

For the music director, a Davidic psalm.

Patiently, I waited for Adonai,

and Adonai turned toward me

and heard my cry.

Adonai lifted me up out of the slimy pit,

out of the muck and mire,

set my feet upon a rock

and made firm my footsteps.

Adonai placed a new song in my mouth,

a hymn praising our God.

Many will see and be in awe

and trust in Adonai.

The person who puts their trust in Adonai

is blessed, instead of following arrogant people

or those who listen to lies.

Much have You done, Adonai,

You plan wonderful things for us

– nothing can compare with You!

It would be impossible for me to recount

all Your deeds.

You don’t want sacrifice or offering

– You have opened my ears –

You don’t require burnt or sin offerings.

Then I spoke, “Here I am, I have come

– it is written about me in the scroll of a book.

I delight to do what You want, my God.

Yes, Your Torah lives in my heart.”

I declare the good news of righteousness

in the great assembly.

Behold, I do not shut up my lips Adonai,

 as You know.

I do not hide Your righteousness in my heart,

instead I spoke about

Your salvation and faithfulness.

I did not hide Your compassion and truth

from the great assembly.

Adonai, don’t hold back Your mercy from me.

Let Your compassion and truth

protect me always.

For limitless troubles surround me,

my mistakes have overwhelmed me

– making me blind –

more numerous than the hairs in my head

– and my heart is weak.

Adonai, deliver me!

Adonai, race to my help!

Let those who seek to end my life

be disgraced and humiliated.

Let those who wish evil for me

be driven back in disgrace.

Let those who mock me

be appalled at their own humiliation.

Let everyone who seeks You

be glad and rejoice in You,

let everyone who loves Your salvation say

“Adonai be magnified!” continuously.

As for me, I am poor and needy,

yet the Lord thinks of me.

You are my help and salvation,

my God, come quickly!

Psalm 38

A Davidic psalm of remembrance.

Adonai, don’t punish me out of anger,

or discipline me with Your wrath.

Your arrows have plunged deep within me

and Your hand presses down on me.

My body is without health

because of Your anger.

My bones are without strength

because of my transgressions.

My guilt weighs heavy on my head,

it is a burden too heavy to bear.

My foolishness has given me

foul and festering wounds.

I am hunched over,

greatly bowed down.

All day I walk around mourning.

For burning pain fills my heart

and health is absent from my body,

I am empty and completely crushed.

The anguish in my heart makes me groan.

Lord, all that I long for is known by You

and You know how I sigh.

My heart races, my strength fails me.

Even the light in my eyes has left.

My friends and companions avoid me

because of my affliction,

and my family stand at a distance.

Those who seek to kill me set traps.

Those who want to harm me

threaten my destruction; they lie all day.

Like the deaf, I cannot hear.

Like the mute, I cannot speak.

Yes, I have become like one who cannot hear,

whose mouth is empty of rebuttals.

But Lord, I will wait for You

– You will answer, Lord, my God.

Because I said “Don’t let my enemies rejoice

or feel elevated over me when I stumble.”

For I am about to fall,

and constantly I am aware of my pain.

I admit my mistakes;

I feel anxious about my transgressions.

My vigorous enemies are numerous.

Many hate me without reason.

Those who repay evil for good

are against me

because I seek only the good.

Adonai, don’t abandon me,

my God, don’t be far from me.

Come speedily to my aid,

my Lord and salvation.

Psalm 37

Of David.

Don’t worry because of those who act evilly,

don’t envy those who act wrongly.

They will soon wither like the grass

and wilt like a tender green herb.

Trust in Adonai and do what is good.

Live in the land and feast on faithfulness.

Take delight in Adonai

and Adonai will give your heart what it desires.

Pledge your path to Adonai, trust Adonai,

and Adonai will make your righteousness

shine brightly and your vindication

as bright as noon.

Be still and wait patiently for Adonai.

Don’t worry about those who follow their own paths

and are wealthy, or those who carry out evil schemes.

Turn away from anger and give up wrath;

don’t be agitated because only harm comes from it.

For those who are evil will be cut off,

but those who wait on Adonai

will receive their inheritance.

In a short time, the wicked will cease to be,

if you look for them, they will not be found.

Those who are meek shall inherit the land

and delight in abundant peace.

Wicked people plot against the righteous

and bare their teeth at them.

But the Lord simply laughs at the wicked,

because the Lord knows

what will happen to them.

The wicked draw their sword

and bend their bow to harm those

who are poor and needy,

to kill those who act justly.

Yet their swords will puncture their own hearts,

and their bows will be snapped in two.

It is better to have little like the righteous

than the wealth that many people have,

because the power of the wicked will be smashed,

while Adonai will raise up the righteous.

Adonai watches over all the days

of the blameless, and their inheritance is everlasting.

In times of evil they will not be disgraced,

and in days of hunger, they will be filled.

For the wicked will perish,

they will fade away like smoke,

even if they are as numerous as flowers in a meadow.

Those who are wicked borrow, but don’t repay

while the righteous give generously.

Those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,

but those the Lord curses will be cut off.

If you delight in Adonai’s ways,

Adonai will strengthen your steps.

Even if you stumble, you will not fall

because the Adonai holds your hand.

I once was young and now I’m old

and I have never seen

a righteous person forsaken

or their children beg for bread.

All day long they are gracious and charitable

so their children will be a blessing.

Turn aside from evil ways

and do what is good

so you may live in the land forever.

For Adonai loves those who are just

and does not abandon those who are faithful.

They will be kept safe eternally,

but the seed of the wicked will be destroyed.

Those who are righteous will inherit the land

and live in it for eternity.

Righteous people’s mouths utter wisdom

and their tongues speak justice.

God’s Torah is in their heart. Their steps are firm.

Those who are wicked

lie in wait for the righteous,

intent on killing them.

But Adonai will not leave the righteous

in the hands of the wicked

or let them be condemned when in court.

Wait for Adonai and follow Adonai’s way,

and Adonai will raise you up to inherit the land.

You will watch while the wicked are cut off.

I have observed a wicked, violent person

flourishing like a verdant tree in native soil,

but then in the blink of an eye,

they were no more,

no trace of them could be found,

even though I searched for them.

Pay attention to those who have integrity

and watch those who are upright

because those of shalom have a future.

But those who violate God‘s way

will be completely wiped out

– there will be no future for them.

The salvation of those who are righteous

comes from Adonai.

Adonai is a stronghold in troubling times.

Adonai is their helper and deliverer,

rescuing and saving them from the wicked,

because the righteous take refuge in Adonai.

Psalm 35

A Davidic Psalm.

Oppose those who oppose me, Adonai,

fight with those who fight me.

Gather up Your shield and buckler,

rise up to my aid.

Raise Your spear and ax

against those who pursue me.

Assure my soul “I’m your salvation.”

Let those who want to kill me

be disgraced and ashamed.

Let those who plot evil against me

be turned away in humiliation.

Let them be like windborne chaff;

driven away by the angel of Adonai.

Let their path be slippery and dark

and the angel of Adonai chasing them.

They laid a trap for me without reason,

and without reason

they dug a pit for my soul.

Let ruin overtake them

when they least expect it.

Let the trap they laid for me

ensnare them instead!

Let them fall into their trap to their ruin.

Then my soul will delight in Adonai

and rejoice in Adonai’s deliverance.

Even my bones will exclaim

“Who is like You, Adonai,

rescuing the lowly

from those who overpower them,

the lowly from robbers?”

Violent witnesses come forth,

they challenge me about things

I don’t know.

They return my good with evil,

grieving my soul.

Yet I wore sackcloth when they were ill

and humbled my soul with fasting.

When my prayers were unanswered,

I mourned as for my friend or relative.

I was bent in grief

as for my own parent.

But when I stumbled

they gleefully gathered against me.

Malicious strangers rose against me,

clawing at me without end.

They mocked me like the godless do,

grinding their teeth.

My Lord, how long will you watch this happen?

Deliver me from their assaults,

my lonely life from these lions.

I will praise You before the great assembly,

exulting You among the crowds.

Don’t let my enemies gloat over me

without reason

or let those who hate me

wink with derision.

For they don’t speak peacefully,

rather they speak lies

about those who live quietly here.

They jeer against me saying

“Yes, yes, we’ve seen it for ourselves!”

Adonai, You’ve noticed it,

don’t be silent.

Adonai, stay close to me.

Awaken and arise to defend me and my cause,

my Adonai and my God!

Prove my innocence, Adonai, my God,

in accordance with Your righteousness

and don’t allow them to gloat over me.

Don’t let them think to themselves

“Yes, we got what we wanted!

We gobbled him up!”

Let those who celebrate my misfortune

be humiliated and filled with shame.

Let those who

puff themselves up over me

wear the rags of shame and disgrace.

May those who seek my vindication

shout out with joy and gladness.

May such people forever say

“May Adonai be exalted,

Who delights in the peace of Adonai’s servant.”

Then my tongue will openly proclaim

Your justice

and praise You all day long.

Psalm 34

About David, when he pretended

to be insane before Abimelech,

who banished him and he left.

I will at all times praise Adonai.

My mouth is always full of praise for Adonai.

I will boast in Adonai.

Let those who are humble

hear and be glad.

Proclaim Adonai’s greatness with me,

together let us lift Adonai’s Name up.

I searched for Adonai,

and Adonai replied to me,

removing all my fears.

The faces of those who look to Adonai

are lit up with joy,

their faces will never show shame.

This poor person called out,

and Adonai heard,

saved them from all their distress.

Adonai‘s angel encamps around those

who are reverent to Adonai

and rescues them.

Taste and see that Adonai is good.

The one who takes refuge in Adonai is blessed.

Show reverence to Adonai,

you who are Adonai’s holy ones,

for those who do

have all they need.

Even young lions may go without and go hungry,

but those who seek Adonai

never want for good things.

Come, children, and listen:

I will teach you to honor Adonai.

Does life delight you?

Do you want to see many good days?

Then don’t say evil or deceitful things.

Walk away from evil

and do what is right.

Seek peace and run after it.

Adonai’s eyes are on the righteous,

Adonai’s ears are open to their cries.

But Adonai’s face is turned away

from those who do evil,

to blot out the memory of them

from the Earth.

When the righteous cry out,

Adonai hears and rescues them

from all their woes.

Adonai is near

to those who are brokenhearted

and rescues those

whose spirits are crushed.

Those who are righteous have many troubles,

but Adonai rescues them from them all.

Adonai protects all of their bones

– they remain whole.

Evil slays the wicked,

and those who hate righteous people

will be condemned.

Adonai rescues the souls

of those who serve Adonai,

those who take refuge in Adonai

will never be held guilty.

Psalm 31

Refuge/Sukkah/shelter.

For the music director: a psalm of David.

I have taken refuge in You, Adonai,

please never let me be disgraced,

let Your righteousness be my deliverance.

Listen to me and quickly rescue me.

Be my safe refuge of rock,

a fortress for my deliverance.

Because You are my rock and fortress,

You guide me for the sake of Your name.

Free me from the hidden trap

others have laid for me,

because You are my stronghold.

I entrust my soul into Your hands.

You have saved me, Adonai,

God of faithfulness.

I detest those

who put their faith in worthless idols;

as for me, I rely on Adonai.

I will gladly rejoice in Your lovingkindness,

for You have beheld my affliction.

You know my soul‘s anguish

and did not turn me over to my enemies hands.

Instead, You placed me in wide-open spaces.

Show mercy to me, Adonai

because I am distressed.

My eyes are weak with grief

so too my soul and body.

My life is consumed with grief

and my years with groaning,

my anguish causes my strength to fail

and my bones to crumble.

My neighbors sneer at me

and my friends fear me

because of all my enemies.

My allies run away

when they see me on the street.

I am as forgotten as a corpse,

I am like a broken vase.

I’ve heard the many rumors

– there is terror all around

as they conspire to plot to kill me.

But I trust in You, Adonai,

saying You are my God.

My life‘s path is in Your hands,

steer me away from my enemies,

and those who chase me.

Look favorably upon me,

save me with Your mercy.

I have called upon You, Adonai,

let me not be disgraced, instead,

let the wicked feel disgrace

and be silent in the grave.

Let those who lie be silenced

for they speak against the righteous arrogantly,

with pride and contempt.

How vast is the goodness

that You have set aside

for those who revere You,

which You have openly bestowed

on those who take refuge in You.

You keep them in Your presence,

safe from people’s schemes.

You shelter them

from quarrelsome tongues.

Blessed be Adonai,

for God has shown me

God‘s wonderful love when I was

in a city under siege.

I said “I’ve been cut off, You can’t see me!”

But when I called for a help,

You heard my pleas.

All faithful people, love God!

God preserves all who are faithful,

but the arrogant are repaid in full.

Courage!

Let Your heart be strengthened,

all You who put Your hope in Adonai.

Psalm 27

Let your heart take courage.

Of David.

Adonai is my light and my deliverance.

Who should I be afraid of?

Adonai is my life‘s fortress

who should cause me dread?

When the wicked drew near to gobble me up

– those who fight and conspire against me

– they tripped and fell.

Even if an army wages war against me,

my heart will be at peace.

Even if I am besieged,

I will be full of trust.

I have asked my only one thing of Adonai,

only one thing do I seek:

to live in Adonai‘s House every day of my life,

to admire the beauty of Adonai

and meditate in the Temple.

For when trouble comes,

Adonai will hide me in Adonai’s sukkah,

keep me safe in Adonai‘s own tent

and place me high upon a rock.

Then my head will be far above

all my foes around me.

With shouts of joy I will offer sacrifices in Adonai‘s shelter.

Truly, I will sing praises to Adonai.

Adonai, hear me when I call to You,

be compassionate, and answer me.

My heart tells me to seek Your face Adonai,

I seek Your face.

Do not turn away Your face from me.

Don’t push me away in anger.

You have always been my help.

Do not reject or abandoned me,

oh God my rescuer.

Even if my parents abandon me,

Adonai will take me in.

Because I have enemies,

teach me Your way, Adonai,

and guide me on a level path.

Don’t give me over to the desires of my enemies.

Liars rise up against me,

exhaling violence.

I am confident that I will see

the goodness of Adonai in this life.

Wait for Adonai.

Be strong.

Let your heart be encouraged,

and wait for Adonai.

Psalm 25

Of David.

I raise up my soul to you, Adonai.

I trust in you, God,

so I will not feel shame,

and my enemies will have nothing

to gloat about.

One who waits for you will surely

never feel shame.

But those who are treacherous

without reason will feel shame.

Adonai, show me your ways.

Guide me into your paths.

Direct me in your truth and inform me,

for you are the God who rescues me,

I wait all day long for you.

Adonai, recall your mercy and compassion,

because they have always existed.

Forget the mistakes I made

when I was young and rebellious.

Remember me through your merciful compassion

so that your goodness may be honored, Adonai.

Adonai is good and virtuous.

Because of this, Adonai teaches the correct path to the lost.

Adonai directs those who are humble

in the correct things to do

and teaches them the correct way.

All of God‘s ways are full of merciful compassion,

and truth to those who honor God‘s covenant

and follow God‘s instruction.

For the sake of your name,

Adonai, forgive my guilt, for it is immense.

Who is the person who reveres God?

God will instruct them in the way they should select.

Their soul lives in goodness

and their descendants will receive the land.

Adonai confide in those who revere Adonai.

Adonai reveals Adonai‘s covenant to them.

I always have my eyes turned to Adonai

because Adonai is the One who will free

my feet from the snare.

Look upon me and show me kindness

because I am lonely and in distress.

The troubles of my heart grow bigger.

Rescue me from my affliction.

Look up upon my suffering and trouble,

and remove all my mistakes.

Look at how many enemies I have

and how violently they hate me.

Protect my soul and rescue me.

Don’t let me be shamed because I trust you.

May integrity and virtue watch over me

because I wait for you.

Save Israel, oh God, from all their woes.

word/Word

In the Episcopal church, as part of becoming a priest, you have to agree to this statement- “The Bible contains everything necessary for salvation.”

I have a hard time with this. I find awakening and enlightenment to be found in sacred texts from all around the world. I think that God didn’t put all the eggs in one basket. I think that there are way more people on this earth that God wants to reach than just those who have been exposed to the Bible. So I don’t think the Bible is the only pathway to God.

Also, it assumes that God has no intervention going on. I have a hard time believing that you can just read this particular book and you will be saved. What about the intervention of the Holy Spirit? What about coming to know Jesus as your friend? These are not mentioned.

Actually, if all you have to do to get saved is read the Bible, then you don’t need priests at all. Somehow I doubt they have thought about that.

It sounds like idolatry to say that the Bible contains everything necessary for salvation. This sounds like they are worshipping a book, and not the source of the words. The paper is more important than the flesh and blood that is Jesus.

They are worshipping the words and not the Word.
