Psalm 45

For the music director: to the tune of “Lilies”.

A contemplative song of the sons of Korah. A love song.

My heart is moved by a good word

as I speak my verses to the king.

My tongue is like the pen of a skillful writer.

You are the most handsome of all men.

Grace pours forth from your lips,

and so God has forever blessed you.

O mighty one, gird your sword on your thigh,

in your majesty and splendor.

Ride forth victoriously in your majesty

for the cause of truth, humility, and justice.

Let your right hand display awe-inspiring acts.

Your sharp arrows pierce the hearts

of the king’s enemies; people fall beneath you.

Your throne, O God, is eternal,

and Your kingdom‘s scepter is one of justice.

You love righteousness and despise wickedness,

therefore God, your God, has anointed you

with the oil of gladness,

setting you above your companions.

The fragrance of myrrh, aloes, and cassia

perfumes all your robes.

The sound of stringed instruments

coming from ivory palaces makes you glad.

Princesses are among your honored women.

The queen, bedecked in gold from Ophir,

stands at your right hand.

“Daughter, listen well:

forget your father‘s house and your people

so that the king will be entranced by your beauty.

Honor him, because he is your master.

A daughter of Tyre (a wealthy place)

will bring you a gift, courting your favor.”

The princess is glorious in her palace chamber

– her gown is woven with gold.

In embroidered garments she is led to the king.

Her virgin companions accompany her.

They enter into the king’s palace,

led in with joy and gladness.

Your sons will take the place of their ancestors.

You will declare them princes throughout the land.

I will ensure your name is remembered

in all generations

so that the nations will forever praise you.
